Operation Christmas Drop

LI: To write a summary of the story behind the Operation Christmas Drop in your own words.

For the last 68 years the men and women of the US air force who are based at Andersen Air force Base in Guam have been using a pilot training drill to drop much needed supplies to the people who live on the 50 remote islands that surround Guam. Today in LS2 we have been researching the Operation Christmas Drop. It is a tradition that started in 1952, with the help of many people donating money and volunteering to help wrap the presents to send to Guam , the air force Men & Women have been going around to 50 different islands and countries to drop off supplies in large crates that land with a parachute. It started off as an training exercise for the air force men & women to practise taking food supplies to there troops but then it began to be the longest US civil defence in the world. Something I have learnt and found interesting is that when they make the presents is that they use the same size boxes for all the presents. Doing this was fun and cool to learn what the US Air force is doing for Islands that are unfortunate to get things that we have and how the community is helping with this Operation.

Illustrated Story

LI: To write a pourquoi (tell me why or how) story that paints a picture in the mind of the reader.

Our challenge this week was to create a porquoi story that we would illustrate and share with our junior classes. A porquoi story tells us why something is the way it is. Our story tells why/how… This morning we shared our stories with Room 2 and Room 4, and they loved listening to them. I enjoyed doing this story because I got to work collaboratively with my friends and were very creative with our animated story.

Holiday Decorations

For this term, The LS2 students designed and created Holiday Decorations using Hand Sewing. We started off  by asking questions to our client who was Mr Johnston. Then we created a DLO(Brainstorm) and a (Mood Board) with the information that can help us understand what we are going to make. Brainstorming the information helped us learn more about How,Why,What,Shape and Who. The Materials and equipment we used were Threads, felt,Cotton,String,Buttons, googly eyes and Paper.  We needed to make sure that our decorations were 10cm big, so we started off by getting a ruler and measuring the length and the width. For my first decoration I decided to create a Hannukah Star. We used paper and a drawing pencil to help us create our first design. But firstly I needed to learn the type of sewing we’re doing. We learned three different types of hand sewing which is Blanket Stitch,Outline Stitch and a Running Stitch by learning how to use the different types of stitching we practices onto a 10cm square(made out of felt). After practising more and more we decided to create our decoration by creating our decoration we planned about. Then after creating all the planning and understanding what we need to do we created our first design. The first design I decided to create was a Hannukah Star I really enjoyed creating this decoration because it represented the holiday celebration we were creating, I really enjoyed working with others and working together to create the design. After completing my first design I decided to create a another one which was a Palm Tree I think I’ve improved a lot in my stitching, I think it was good because we learned more about sewing and it was a lot of fun.

Exploring our national current events

 LI: To identify author’s purpose.

During reading we also talked about Current News in New Zealand. In groups of 4-5 we explored our current news in NZ using different News Websites like - RNZ (Radio NZ), Newshub, NZ Herald, Kiwi Kids News and more. Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make desicions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. Here are the reasons of each news we placed on our Google Maps.

  • Timeliness
  • Magnitude
  • Relevance
  • Unexpectedness
  • Impact
  • Positive Reference
  • Negative Referance
  • Oddity
  • Conflict
  • Continuity
  • Emotions
  • Progress

Provocation: Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?

LI:To identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion.

Today we made a provocation DLO. A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation which is the YES and the NO our provocation was Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that information to help us form an opinion that we were all happy with  our decision. Our opinion was a Yes and No because there are some reasons for why we need to wear a mask and there are some reasons why we shouldn’t wear one. Both Yes and No reasons are equally important. We need to stay safe and away from the covid 19 and other diseases.

Main Idea/Embarrassment.

L.I to find out the main idea

This DLO is about the Main Ideas in the book this book is called the Embarrassment poem. I worked with Afa,Hosea,Liletina and  Rj. We needed to read the book twice to find out the main details that will help others and yourself understand the main Idea. As you can see in this DLO that we think that the MAIN IDEA is knowing how to handle Embarrassment. Working with my friends was really fun and enjoying because we shared our ideas and we were collaborating, working as a team. The thing that i liked about this poem is how it tell us the secret to not be embarrassment like for an example you can jest laugh
it all out till the people that is laughing at you has left.

weighty Challenge Maths DLO

L.I to create a DLO about any of the Weighty Maths Challenges

This week we were put into groups for maths In these groups we made up names that  represent maths or includes maths names  , our name that we chose for our group  was The multiplying 7’s because we had seven people in our group and we were supposed to multiply our questions we were given . In the multiplying 7’s were Victoria our leader Giovannie,Makaili,Afa,Karlos , Ong  and Lily  , we put all of our opinions together to come with different solutions to solve our challenges and we would have to ask questions if we didn't understand the question or ask for help because no one should have sat in silence because we are a team and we are all  supposed participate so we all can have friendship even though we haven't worked together but we  did make a big difference and we worked as a good team whether we liked  working together or not.

This week for tech, The year 7s Worked with Mrs Sharma and Mr Dunn. Mr Dunn showed us by explaining and understanding How many fins does the rocket need to fly ( No Fins , 2 Fins or 4 Fins). For my prediction. I think my rocket needs 4 fins to fly into the sky. We also started off by getting straws and making it into rocket ships. We created it by turning the front tip and bending it. After bending it, we needed to grab some scalar tape  and put it onto the straw.  We then started off by writing keywords that link to rocket science. We also learned interesting facts and information about rockets. The most interesting fact I learned was that there is a New Zealand Rocket company called Rocket Lab and learning about who works with them. Visit to Life Education

This week we went to Life Education. We went in groups. I was in group 1 which is the volleyball team. The first session was about our Hauora and our brain. First we watched videos about Kapi, and what’s happening to him. He was getting bullied, which caused him to play video games all day in the weekend, not cleaning his room, or even having a shower. Next we learnt about the brain, and the brain cells. There are about billions of brain cells, and you think 7,000 thoughts a day. That was what we learnt for the first session. The next session we learnt about how bad drugs are to our brains. We also sent a letter to Kapi, about how he can help himself build his walls back from Hauora. I learnt a lot of new things.

What Is Science

L.I To find the three most vital ideas from the information to help us find the answer “What is science?”

This week we watched a video which helped us understand what science is. While watching the video, we took notes, by selecting and rejecting the information. We used the information to identify the three most vital ideas. We shared our ideas and negotiated on where to put the information, whether it was four very important ideas or three most vital ideas. We also collaborated and respected each other's opinions for this activity.

We think the three most vital ideas are:
  • Science is an answer and has the power to destroy and heal.
  • Science includes physics, chemistry and biology.
  • Science is discovering new things

Science/ Summarising

L.I: To summarise the information.

This week for our reading topic (science), we created a summary using the information from our post it notes. In our summary, we skimmed and scanned to find the important keywords. We also shared our ideas and collaborated to create our summary. For our next activity, we used a question dice to help us create three interesting questions that we wanted to research. We all worked together in these activities.

The three most interesting questions are:

  • When was science discovered?

  • Why is science important?

  • How is science different from the past to today?
